Jacks Bar restaurant review

Popular bar-restaurant not far from the Chaudanne

Picture this: a long day on the mountain, its been snowing all day and have you’ve had a beer or two at après on the mountain but you’re not quite ready to go home yet. What’s the next logical step?

Jacks bar of course! But what is Jacks bar? A bar with pumping après bands every day of the week just a stones throw from the Chaudanne, yes! But more than that it’s also a fantastic place to stop for a pizza, mac and cheese, nachos a hot dog or burger.

Famous for its delicious pizzas served until 11pm Jacks bar is an ideal hang out for those wanting to listen to the best live music in town whilst munching on a fantastic pizza. The pizzas range from 10 to 20 euros depending on how hungry you are and how fancy you’re feeling. The massive serving of nachos are 16 euros and the increasingly popular amongst musicians, ‘hot diggity dawg’ is 12 euros. Not only does Jacks Bar offer a Pizza du Jour every day but they also offer an exciting new flavour of ‘Jack n Cheese’ every day for the bargain price of 12 euros! On my afternoon après-ski visit I had a ‘hot diggity dawg’ hot dog and an Italian pizza.

The hot dog did not at all disappoint and definitely lived up to all the talk I’d heard amongst the band members who tend to have it as an after gig treat. The sausage is made by the local Savoieire butcher and is huge and bursting with meaty flavour. The hot dog is also served with a homemade sauerkraut that is bitter and vinegary but not overpowering. The sausage and sauerkraut were complimented by a sweet brioche bun and mountains of both fried onions and sweet crispy onions- this hot dog was exactly what I was craving after a day tackling the powder.

Next onto the pizza. Jacks Bar serves pizzas from 12pm-11pm and has a huge selection of toppings, (ranging from ‘The Badboy’ with jalapenos and cornichons, to a duck and hoisin topping) I went for ‘The Italian’, made with a crispy thin base and oodles of gooey mozzarella, this was a classic done well. The toppings on this particular pizza are serrano ham, black olives, sundried tomatoes, basil oil and fresh rocket. My first observation was that there was certainly no shortage of toppings and every bite had a little bit of everything on it, ideal!

The cured serrano ham was wonderfully salty alongside the sweet tang of the sundried cherry tomatoes and the olives are juicy and powerful. The basil oil was not very evident but rather was an undertone that could be vaguely noticed at the end of every mouthful. The huge handful of fresh rocket on top also add a peppery kick and allow for an burst of freshness amongst the indulgent goo of the cheesy pizza. I sat back and enjoyed my pizza whilst a family played pool on the free pool table and a group of friends watched extreme ski videos on one of the 4 sports screens.

I sat at the bar and enjoyed a wonderfully hoppy ‘Fourpure’ American IPA and a delicious homemade hot chocolate and baileys with whipped cream whilst the band started to set up for the extended live music Apres special on a Wednesday with three live bands, The Mardy Johnny Depps, The Wingmen and Maps. What a fantastic way to end a great day of skiing.

If you’re looking for an after ski fix of some delicious, filling and well- priced food in a great atmosphere then look no further than Jacks Bar, just a minute from the Chaudanne in Meribel Centre.
