featured in News & reviews Author Ellie Mahoney, Meribel Editor Updated

Taking the kids skiing in Méribel this winter? A ski holiday with little ones can be a big adventure. After booking the holiday and packing up all the gear you still need to figure out ski lessons for the kids and how to keep them happy the entire week!

We’ve got the low down on children’s ski lessons in Meribel and everything else you need to know to ensure the kids enjoy their holiday and therefore so can you.

Ski Schools

Meribel has a great choice of Ski Schools, most of whom offer children's lessons and there are a handful of Private Ski Instructors who can also take small groups of children or individuals.

Meeting Points

Ski school meeting points tend to be at the bottom of the ski lifts in each of the different sectors of Meribel and some Ski Schools or Private Instructors can meet you at a location of your choice, you just need to ask if they offer this service.

Bringing the babies along?

Don’t be intimidated if you’re on holiday with very wee ones, free buses around Méribel are child-friendly and allow easy access around the resort. Babies and buggies can go up the bubbles and cable cars but keep in mind the pressure change with the higher altitude - you may want to seek advice from your family doctor first.

If you fancy a stroll, there are a number of walking routes around resort, in particular near the Altiport in Méribel and around Lac Tueda in Méribel-Mottaret. Both have nice flat walks that are well sign posted, all you need is good footwear!

And don’t worry about lugging all your baby gear along with you. Hire every product could possibly need from Holiday Baby Hire. From buggies to baby monitors to cots and even down snow suits, they’ve got it covered and will deliver to your accommodation in Méribel.

Lift Passes for Little Ones

Kids under 5 ski for free, but they still need to get a lift pass for access onto all the lifts. Kids under 1m25 must be accompanied by an adult on the chair, no more than 2 kids per adult (one on either side).

Where to eat with the kids?

There are a number of child-friendly restaurants in Méribel. Restaurant Castors offer a children’s menu with children’s portions. They have great food - pasta, burgers or chicken nuggets and chips, and tartiflette can all be found on the menu. There is also a snack bar serving quick sandwiches and burgers.

There are lots of restaurants just across from the Chaudanne. Meribar, Tremplin, Jacks/Evolution also have kids menus with mixtures of pasta, pizza and all things kid-friendly!

Situated on the piste, is the Rond Point. Just a bubble ride up from the Chaudanne and a short ski down a blue run, it is easily accessible as long as you can snowplough! There are great views and a huge terrace to sit bask in the sun while enjoying some food. With kids menus available, and a bus stop right beside the restaurant if you don’t fancy a ski down afterwards, this is a great place to enjoy a leisurely afternoon lunch with the kids. What else can the kids get up to?

If you’re looking for some afternoon and evening activities for the kids, Méribel has plenty to offer. Inside the Olympic Centre you can find a number of non-skiing activities to keep the kids entertained. There is a large swimming pool facility with different sized pools and a big slide, which opens most days at 2pm. There is also a 10 pin bowling alley if you fancy a game or two. You can book lanes in advance and they can also set up kids septic lanes. Or venture onto the large ice skating rink for a spin - they offer frames for smaller kids.

For an evening in the snow, head out flood light sledging in Méribel-Mottaret in the Yeti Park. There are also various designated places for sledging around the resort during the day.

Also check out what is going on for the week you’re there. When you arrive in your resort ask your reps or head down to the tourist office to find out what’s on during your week in Méribel. With different activities/entertainment each week it’s good to get your finger on the pulse so as not to miss out. From Elf shows and Santa’s parade during Christmas, to an on-snow music concert for New Year to torchlight descents throughout the season, there’s often something special going on in resort.

Thanks very much to the team at New Generation Meribel for this article.

New Generation Meribel Info

Children’s group ski lessons with New Generation run Monday-Friday (with an optional Sunday add-on) from 9am until 1:30pm. This includes a break in the middle for a drink and a snack and allows the group to explore the slopes of Méribel without any time constraints (and allows you time to explore too!). There is also an option to extend the lesson to two full days on Tuesday and Thursday. This is a great option for kids who want to socialise and make new friends all whilst improving their skiing.

Lessons run from beginners to Freeride level ages 4-13 (please specify level and age when booking to ensure the best fit group). For children age 4-5 we have shorter group lessons that run for two hours, allowing maximum fun without tiring out the little legs! Or opt for private kids lessons that give one on one experience, or the lesson can be shared amongst a few children of the same level, where they get 100% of the instructors attention. The instructor can tailor the lesson exactly to the need to your child, or children.

The meeting point for our Méribel Ski School is situated at the Chaudanne in Méribel at the bottom of the Tougnette bubble near the lift pass office. In Méribel we take advantage of the fun kids equipment available on the slopes. The older kids often head up towards Méribel-Mottaret to the Yeti Park where there are two magic carpets, gates for racing and caves to explore.

See you on the slopes!
