Latest race report from Meribel with Cara the Skier

What a surprisingly sunny week it has been here in Meribel! The temperatures have shot up again and it’s warm from first thing in the morning so get up high and early to get the best of the skiing.

Since the Speed races at the French Championships in Meribel were cancelled I headed to Villars de Lans to do some other races but due to the ridiculous amount of snow that fell they were cancelled too! So I came back to Meribel for a day off and some Giant Slalom training. We got to train on a great piste that runs down the side of the Snow Park called Grive. When there is no one training on this run it is really fun to whizz down as it has lots of big rolls and a quick turn around on the Poma lift. The next day I got to forerun a boys FIS race in Courchevel. Forerunning is a really great experience as you get to start first and ski a race hill and course. Courchevel is an especially important hill as it is where the Scottish National Championships are held in a few weeks’ time. I thought I had skied really well but my times weren’t too fast. However, the course was really good fun and I had a great day watching the boys racing.

This week has been the build-up the British Championships. I’ve been trying not to tire myself out too much as I have nine days of races in a row starting tomorrow! I will be racing in all five disciplines, Downhill, Super G, Super Combined, Giant Slalom and Slalom in both Championship and Junior Championship races. I’m looking forward to the races, excited to get to ski on the hill that I have been training on but I’m also really nervous! I just need to keep my focus and stay calm... and carry on!

This morning I experienced Meribel at its best! I was on the first lift and headed right up to the top of Tougnette to free ski on my Downhill skis. The pistes were completely empty and the snow was perfectly piste bashed. The sky was so clear that you could see all the way to Mont Blanc.
A little quiz for everyone… How well do you really know the Three Valleys?! What is the only lift in the Three Valleys that you can see the Matterhorn from? Tweet me your answer to @caratheskier, comment below or come and find me in the finish area in the Chaudanne at the British Champs. I will be letting you know the answer in my race report next Saturday!
