La Terrasse du Village restaurant review

Delicious, filling food and great service

featured in Restaurant reviews Author Amelia Power, Meribel Reporter Updated

On a snowy evening in Méribel we took a short bus ride down to Meribel Village to La Terrasse du Village restaurant. The restaurant is part of the infamous après-ski venue, Lodge Du village and the classy dining counterpart.

On arrival we sat in some comfy armchairs in the foyer and enjoyed a drink and some olives before being shown to our table. We were treated to some free amuse-bouche of smoked salmon mascarpone en croute. This consisted of crunchy toast layered with creamy mascarpone, flavourful smoked salmon and a scattering of some salty toasted Parma ham crumb. The flavours were excellently balanced and these tasty little morsels went down an absolute treat with the house red, La Croisade Carignon Vieilles Vignes.

Due to the lateness of our reservation, the restaurant had a very relaxed and personal atmosphere, the staff were incredibly friendly and attentive and were sure to make sure our bread basket was topped up and wine glasses always full!

The menu offers a concise but diverse range of dishes, with starters sitting around the 10 euro mark and mains ranging from 17 to 24 euros. For starters we went for bruschetta and the starter of the day which was scallops and pork belly. The bruschetta was served on crunchy grilled baguette, covered in a mixture of fresh diced tomatoes and sweet sun-dried tomatoes and little balls of mozzarella with a mixed salad of crispy young leaves and a sweet, sticky balsamic glaze. This was a light and refreshing starter which was bursting with flavour but left room for the next tasty dishes to come.

Next up the starter du jour. This was a show stopper! Soft, melt in the mouth scallops paired with crispy skinned, tender pork belly and a crunchy parma ham crumb. The contrasting textures and flavours of the salty ham, and subtle flavours of the scallop came alive when paired with the other elements of the dish; sweet black pudding, young tangy spinach leaves and pea puree which was artistically dotted around the plate. Not only was this dish a taste sensation but it was presented so beautifully that I was almost reluctant to dig in!

steak and dauphinoise potatoes

For main course we had the grilled rib-eye steak and and pan fried fillet of sea bass. The rib eye steak was tender and tasty, and cooked perfectly saignent to order. It was served with potato dauphinoise, which were indulgent and full of flavour, as well as sautéed green beans and sweet, young petit pois. The peppercorn sauce was creamy and packed with punchy peppercorns. The steak itself was of a good size and seasoned perfectly. This dish was very traditional and hit the spot.

The pan-fried fillet of sea bass was cooked to the ideal point, between soft and flaky and tasted extraordinarily fresh. The fish skin was crispy and salty and added a great little crunch. The fish was served on a bed of mildly spiced softened red cabbage a sweet, earthy beetroot puree and sautéed potato slices. The dish was uplifted by a smattering of tangy tomato and red onion salsa which added a whole new element to the palate. The flavours in this dish were incredibly complex and unexpected, with contrasting concepts of the earthy and spicy flavours of the beetroot and red cabbage and the sharper piquant flavours of the salsa. However, this dish came together perfectly as every element was balanced to make the main element on the plate, the sea bass, sing!

By this point in the meal everyone was suitably wined and dined, so we opted to share a dessert between the 4 of us of the chocolate truffle tort and aren’t we glad we shared!

The torte was made up of a buttery biscuit base, and a rich, velvety chocolate filling. It was served with a mixture of blueberries, raspberries and redcurrants and a lovely vanilla bean ice cream. This dessert was utterly delicious but even the 4 of us couldn’t finish it after such a decadent meal!

After a few digestif shots of local Génépi, we ventured out into the cold, a little giggly and completely satisfied, bravo La Terrasse!

So if you’re spending some time in Meribel, then be sure to head to La Terrasse du Village. Why not go to après ski at the Lodge Du Village upstairs then treat yourself to a glorious meal downstairs in La Terrasse afterwards. Be sure to check out their daily specials and give the sea bass a try.
