Merry Russian Christmas: 9th January 2012

Festive celebrations continue in Meribel

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Jack Franks, Meribel Reporter Updated

Christmas, New Years, Hanukah, Eid, Chinese New Year, Diwali... these are all things I have heard of, that I am aware of being celebrated, events that at some point in my life friends and acquaintances of mine have recognised and honoured. This week I found out that Russians are so special that they have their own Christmas. Just for Russian people. I’m not sure if this means they have their own Jesus or not but on Friday evening the Chaudanne was once again turned into the outdoor winter night club we enjoyed on New Year’s Eve. Hoards of Russian revellers filled the dance floor and anybody else who happened to be in the area soaked up the unique atmosphere. It was an unexpected surprise and I’m certain that anyone that caught either of these nights will be sharing my excitement for Rajasthani New Year!

I won’t bore you with the details this week but I will very briefly let you know that weather-wise it’s great news; the snow hasn’t stopped and it is wonderful. For any snowboarders reading I will translate that for you below.

“Rad news, it’s been puking pow nonstop and it’s gnarly!”

This coming Wednesday, Dick’s Tea Bar plays host to a DJ set from world renowned sample twisting, break beat maestro ‘Krafty Kuts’. I was lucky enough to catch his set last year at ‘Le Loft’ and if this is anything to go by you won’t want to miss out. ‘Dick’s’ is a slightly larger and generally more suitable venue than the zebra print covered ‘Loft’ for such a night and I would bet my left ski boot on it being a sell out. Tickets are available from Jack’s, Evolution and Dick’s so go get yours now for €5 in advance to avoid disappointment.

During Saturday night’s open mic evening at The Den the hunger pangs kicked in hard and after scouring the menu I decided to push the boat out and go for their ‘Midnight Feast’. Between 11.30 and 01.00 every evening, The Den’s chef picks 3 select dishes from the menu and for €12 you get all 3 dishes and a drink. Saturday’s picks were ravioli nachos, calamari and seared tuna with triple fried chips, a delicious bargain!

On Thursday I had the pleasure of attending/ performing at Taking the Piste’s comedy night at Jack’s Bar. I would firstly like to apologise to the lone member of Rond Point staff in attendance for my song about you and your colleagues. I hope you know it was written with love! Secondly I would like to congratulate ‘Abandomen’ for an incredible performance. Their tongue in cheek freestyle hip hop was easily the highlight of the night. The quick witted pair rapped expertly about anything that was thrown at them, quite literally at one point (a head torch, a pack of Camel and a rubber pork chop to name a few). At one point they plucked out one male and one female audience member, asked them a few questions and proceeded to rap the story of their lives, ending in them falling in love and living happily ever after. There wasn’t a single member of the open mouthed audience that wasn’t left in awe of their rapid freestyle comedy and if you ever get a chance to catch ‘Abandomen’ live, it should not be missed.

Attention adrenaline junkies, both the Moon Park in Meribel and the DC Area 43 Park in Mottaret are now open. Limited rails and kickers have been installed and new features are appearing weekly. Take the ‘Plan de l’Homme’ chairlift from the Chaudanne to reach the Moon Park and the Tougnette bubble followed by Plattieres to reach the DC Park.
