Meribel Apres Ski Report: 20th March 2012

A plethora of live entertainment fills the resort this week

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Jack Franks, Meribel Reporter Updated

The fallout from the great fire of Meribel seems to have calmed down and heavy snowfall over the last couple days has surely dampened any possibility of it reigniting. You may be wondering why I have so nonchalantly chucked in the fact that it has been snowing so late in the season but I feel a fool. A couple of weeks ago it snowed and I practically built a god shaped snowman and started worshipping it for bringing us this wonderful final blessing of snow. How silly I feel now, in the space of 24 hours we have had about 6 inches of snow here in Meribel and there is some great off piste to be had out there. Try heading over to the chairlifts, ‘Dent du Burgin’ and ‘Loze’. The off piste under these lifts is incredible and on a soft powder day you are in for a real treat. Also, if you get a chance to ride out the off piste underneath the ‘Olympic’ chairlift (take Roc de Fer, followed by Olympic) before it gets torn to shreds, this is another a prime spot.

Excitement in abundance; not only have we had some well needed late season snowfall, we are also looking at arguably the best week of entertainment so far this year here in resort. Tonight alone throws up a big dilemma. Does one head down to Jack’s Bar to see cult hero and Celebrity Juice legend, ‘Rufus Hound’ doing stand up comedy? Or does one take the more cultural route and head over to the Meribel Auditorium for their last public event of the season, the heavily advertised (try entering a lift station without being greeted by an enormous poster) world music of the much celebrated ‘Susheela Raman’? Whatever you choose, both these events are likely to be season/holiday highlight for all in attendance. I personally have been craving a good gig and some new music so will be heading down to see Miss Raman do her thing. I hear she does a superb Nirvana cover so am very excited. I will be following this up with a review of the night so watch this space.

There are, of course, the usual goings on in and around town tonight and all week long. One of my personal favourite local musicians, ‘Al Jones’ with be gracing the stage for après at ‘Le Pub’ early Thursday evening followed by a late night slot from the much loved ‘Dominos’. I have been lucky enough this season to spend approximately 22 minutes crammed inside the Saulire gondola lift with both of the aforementioned acts when they filmed ‘Saulire Sessions’ with me. See if you can persuade Al to play you his song ‘This Door’, it is a seriously catchy little number which I can’t seem to get out of my head. Check out the Saulire Sessions on Facebook to watch acoustic songs from Al, The Dominos and many other musical acts from the 3 Valleys.

DC Shred Days draw to a close today in Meribel and we say goodbye to some of the world’s best pros who have been doing their thing in the DC Area 43 park. If you haven’t managed to catch them, or you did and are thirsty for some more death defying action, head to Le Pub on Wednesday night where the boys from MTV’s ‘Dirty Sanchez’ will be DJing and ‘performing pranks’. I’m not entirely sure what this will entail but after catching half an episode of their TV show once I am guessing they will be head butting things, nailing their private parts to planks of wood and throwing up on each other. So, if that’s your bag then you know where to be!

After writing my report entitled ‘A Sun Soaked Beer Bonanza’ on the 3rd of March I have been given a small amount of grief for being far too biased towards the beer drinkers of this world. Thankfully I do actually stray away from pints on occasion and have even been known to dabble in the odd cocktail. Scott’s Bar, next to Le Pub is an excellent venue to enjoy a cocktail. In fact it is a perfect venue to enjoy TWO cocktails. Their 2 for 1 deal on cocktails runs every night between 9 and 11. There is a nice selection to choose from and their entertainment schedule is excellent. Why not head along on Thursday night to see Mikey Gray and his two headed beast (that’s his homemade guitar and bass combo by the way, calm down) take to the stage, you won’t regret it. Mine’s a sex on the beach if you’re buying!
