Meribel Apres Ski Report: 19th January 2012

With DJ Blitz & Max le Sax

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Jack Franks, Meribel Reporter Updated

I haven't done as much 'research' for this report over the last week and I am sorry. I work as a chalet host, and how much I go out during a week correlates directly with how generous my guests were in the tip department the previous week. Unfortunately last week my group of 10 drunken blokes celebrating a week long stag party were too hungover on transfer day to remember to leave a tip. Despite the fact that they made twice the amount of mess of a normal guest and that I actually spent the week cutting one particular guests food into bite sized chunks and doing up his coat and shoe laces like a small child (he had dislocated his shoulder).

Thankfully I have had a minor windfall in recent times though and at last have some après to report! I will begin with Wednesdays at the Ronnie, or the ‘Rond Point’ if you prefer. Wednesday is that all important day off for my colleagues and I, so it is the only day of the week that I can actually ‘do the Ronnie’ properly. Yesterday this is exactly what we did. Over the last few weeks I have grown a tiny bit tired of hearing cover bands playing ‘Sex on Fire’, ‘Killing in the Name’ and the inevitable Queen encore and this feeling was echoed by many of my friends. Enter DJ Blitz and Max Le Sax. A refreshingly good DJ with a saxophonist accompanying him has been blowing the roof off of the Rond Point for the last two weeks. Blitz plays a nice mixture of music and actually plays to his crowd. Before the bar fills out and gets busy it is a more chilled musical affair and things get more upbeat with each foot of floor spaced filled. The later part of the pairs set had the Ronnie crowd going wilder than a sub standard cover of ‘bo rap’ ever could. DJ Blitz and Max le Sax – We salute you!

The boat was severely pushed out yesterday and, after my Rond Point session, I was invited by my chalet guests to dinner at Evolution. I went for the set menu which at €25 included 2 courses and a bottle of wine with the option of upgrading to 3 courses. I plumped for a starter and main and by the time I had washed these down with red wine I wasn’t even considering getting a dessert, I was so full. My starter was a thick cauliflower and garlic soup and I had a sirloin steak and chips for the main. The soup was delicious and the steak was cooked very well. I was also very impressed with the attentive service we were given by our waitress, Ellie, who couldn’t do enough for us. Dinner at Evolution was a perfect way to wind down after a heavy après session and I highly recommend it. Make sure to book first as it gets very busy from 6pm onwards.

As predicted, world class DJ ‘Krafty Kuts’ played to a sold out crowd at Dick’s Tea Bar last Wednesday. He had the whole place dancing and may just about have stolen Ed Solo’s crown for best DJ set of the season so far. There are currently no notable events coming up on the Dick’s calendar other than their normal nights but with the acts they have had so far I am very excited to find out who will be headlining the next big night. I will let you know as soon as I find out.

Those of you with a 3 Valleys pass have a wonderful opportunity. Courchevel is currently the only resort in the 3 Valleys bragging it’s own ‘luge run’. At 2 kilometres long, the luge is a fun alternative to skiing. Ask at the tourism office about opening hours. Occasionally the luge is open until 7.30pm as it is entirely flood lit. Just make sure you have a means of transport to get home.

I will leave you with the standard weekly weather chat. We have had over a week of sunshine here in resort now and while the slopes are still in very good condition I think everyone in Meribel is looking forward to a new covering of snow. There is talk of a little bit tomorrow but no word on another huge dump as yet. Fingers crossed we will get one soon as off piste hungry skiers like myself are starting to get itchy feet!
