After a sustained period of very unsettled weather, things seem to have calmed down a bit over the past 7 days. It looks as though fairly settled weather will be in control for the first part of the week before things become a little more unsettled from Thursday onwards.

High pressure is well and truly in control at the moment as the ever-important Jetstream sits nicely over Northern Europe, giving nice, settled weather to the south of the continent. The nicest of weather this week will definitely take place in the early part with Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday set to be glorious – so take advantage of this and grab a lovely outdoor lunch up on the hill!

Barometric pressure currently stands at around 1030Mb and, with wide isobars, the winds look set to stay very light from the north. An approaching cold front, currently over the UK, will bring some snowfall late on Wednesday and into Thursday and Friday when the whole of the Alps will get some fresh snow. With low temperatures accompanying the front, the freeze height will probably to drop to around 750 metres which will ensure nice light powder snow.

Monday

A weak warm front will fizzle out early on Monday morning but will ensure a lovely sunny day. Winds will be light and from the north at around 5km/h. At lower elevations, temperatures will rise to around 6ºC and, with lows of around 2ºC, it looks set to be a stunning day. Don’t forget your sun cream!

Tuesday

A very similar day to Monday so, again, don’t forget your sun cream. Winds will remain at around 5km/h from the north and, with an afternoon high of around 5ºC at lower elevations, it's another deckchair in the afternoon sun!

Wednesday

High pressure remains in control, although falling to around 1020Mb, and this will bring another stunner of a day. However, the approaching cold front looks set to mix things up a bit from Wednesday night onwards. Winds will again be light and from the north in the morning at 4km/h, although they will increase as the day goes on and the cold front arrives. By Wednesday evening, snow will have arrived and, with increasing winds at around 25km/h, by Wednesday night the wind will have backed round to come from the west. Up to 30cm of snow may fall overnight into Thursday.

Thursday

Winds look set to remain at around 25km/h from the west, and these may lead to some intermittent lift closures particularly at higher elevations. It will snow all day on Thursday and will be at its heaviest in the morning. Around 20cm is set to fall on Thursday. Temperatures will drop from their early week deckchair highs to around -8ºC. The freeze height on Thursday looks set to fall to around 750 metres, which will ensure snow to all elevations and it should be nice and powdery.

Friday

Friday will be another snowy and potentially windy day. Winds will increase as the day goes on and may reach 40km/h by the afternoon, this again may lead to some lift closures. The snow looks set to be at its heaviest on Friday afternoon and night, which may lead to some traffic problems on Saturday morning. Up to 45cm of snow may fall on Friday into Saturday.

Saturday

The snow might stop at overnight and Saturday looks like being an overcast day with lighter winds. Temperatures will remain cold with daytime highs of around -2ºC. Winds will have veered back to the north and should hopefully drop to around 15km/h.

Sunday

Another cold day with some cloud and maybe a bit of sunshine. Daytime highs will remain at around -1ºC. Winds look set to be light at around 5-7km/h and variable in their direction.
