by Caroline Sayer | | published: 29th Jun, 2009 Méribel is to become the first French resort to offer its visitors the new Segway human transporter. Silent, electrically-powered and capable of tackling hills and even snow, these innovative machines will offer a new means of exploring the valley. The Segway, it is claimed, is so simple to manouvre, it can be used by anybody. Sophisticated gyroscopes located in the platform and large wheels located on each side allow the rider to remain in balance even when going up or downhill.

This summer a fleet of machines will be available at the Chaudanne for use on an introductory circuit and on group outings of 1 to 2 hours around the valley. Speeds of 5-6km/hr will allow riders in this time to ascend the Truite piste to Mottaret, or perhaps explore the Altiport forests.

Prices:
10 minute introductory session: 5€
1 hour outing: 25€
2 hour outing: 45€

The Segways will be available at the Chaudanne every day throughout the summer from 10.30am to 12.00pm and 2.30pm to 6pm except on Saturdays and rainy days.

The manufacturers claim the Segway offers an ecologically-friendly means of discovering the countryside. Wide, low-pressure tyres don’t damage the ground and the electrically-powered machines emit no pollution and are silent. At a running cost of 1€ per 400km (equivalent to 191 km per litre of fuel) they claim to be the most ecological and economical means of private transport. What’s wrong with walking, we wonder?
