A snowy end to a fabulous season : 24th April 2012
I always experience mixed emotions when I unclip my skis on my last day of the season. Sadness that five months of fun and excitement are over is always mixed with relief that I’ve survived another winter with all my knee ligaments intact.

This winter it is harder than usual to hang up my skis as the snow is so extraordinarily good. It has snowed virtually every day for the past three weeks and another 25cm of snow fell last night – a fitting end to an epic season.
Every winter season is different. I think 2012 will be remembered not only for its great snow but also some bizarre and extreme weather. The snow arrived exceptionally late – there was literally no snow on the ground at the start of December so Méribel’s lift opening date was put back a week. Once the snow started to fall, however, it was like a tap that couldn’t be turned off. It bucketed, dumped, tipped and blizzarded for weeks. In January, the snow in town was chest-high; snow clearing became a twice-daily chore; and the town snowploughs ran out of room to put the stuff. January saw strong gales, which brought down trees and snow drifts meant the top lifts were closed for days on end while the chairlifts were dug out and avalanches were blasted. Méribel then entered a mini-ice age for two weeks. The temperature reached -27C (lower than at the North pole) and some of the lifts froze solid. Then everything changed, and the mid part of the season was so hot and sunny that we skied in the mornings and sunbathed in the afternoons. Finally, winter returned in April and we’ve been skiing powder snow on empty pistes these past weeks. What a memorable season it has been! I’m sure we will reminisce about 2012 for years to come.
If you too have skied your last for this winter, remember to give your ski equipment a little tender loving care before you put it away for the summer. A layer of wax on your ski/board will prevent the base from drying out and stop the edges from rusting. Remember also to clip up your boots to help keep their shape.
If you would like to know what developments you will find in Méribel next winter season, turn to our news page for details of the two major new lifts about to appear in the valley.
We will continue to keep this page updated on an occasional basis during the summer season, so please do check back to see what is happening on the (soon-to-be green) slopes of your favourite mountain resort. Méribel is open from 30 June to 2 September 2012. Summer is a wonderful time of year in the Alps – why not come and see what the resort has to offer?
Finally, thank you for all your lovely comments and feedback over the season – I've enjoyed reading your comments and feeling part of a world-wide community of fellow Méribel-lovers.

Sunshine, fresh snow and marmots : 17th April 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 17th Apr, 2012What a joy it is to be in sunshine and skiing on wonderful snow again! Today saw a rare break in the otherwise unremittingly grisly April weather, so as soon as the first chink of blue appeared in the sky we hurtled onto the pistes. It’s amazing how quickly a dose of sunshine raises your mood - I grinned so hard skiing down Combe Saulire this morning that I actually made my teeth ache from the cold. ...more
Nice snow, shame about the visibility : 15th April 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 15th Apr, 2012The weather in the mountains is like the little girl in the rhyme, the one who “when she was good, was very, very good, but when she was bad, she was horrid”. It’s true that we have enjoyed a lot of very, very good weather this season: heaps of snow in January; weeks of cold sunshine in February followed by weeks of warm sunshine in March. All this has been very pleasant indeed, but we’re paying for it now with a long stretch of horrid weather. ...more
April showers of the frozen kind : 11th April 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 11th Apr, 2012We woke this morning to a transformed Méribel. Last night the resort was green and brown; this morning it was magically returned to a winter wonderland. The trees were snow-laden, the ground was covered by nearly 20cm of snow and the chalet roofs were thatched once again with white. ...more
Powder snow, in April? : 9th April 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 9th Apr, 2012Today there was such a bizarre mixture of early and late season conditions that I felt quite confused. Was it April or January? The bright sunshine and ever-diminishing patch of snow at the Chaudanne proved April is well and truly here, but the cold bite in the air and fresh snow on the slopes felt more like the start of the season. ...more
Easter fun for families : 4th April 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 4th Apr, 2012If you are one of the many people visiting Méribel over Easter weekend, you may be glad to hear there is still plenty of snow in the 3 Vallees – an impressive 177cm (almost 6 feet) on the upper pistes – despite almost constant sunshine for over a month. There is little to say about snow conditions at the moment, other than the pistes are fine in the morning and slushy in the afternoons. Instead, I’ll write about some of the fun things to do with the family over the coming holidays. ...more
Hampshire in the Hills : 2nd April 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 2nd Apr, 2012Méribel is jokingly referred to by the French as “the last British colony”. There are times when the resort resembles Hampshire in the Hills and this week is one of them. The reason for the sudden invasion by “les anglais” is that British schools have broken up but French schools have not. Also, the French don’t ski in large numbers at Easter – they are more attracted to beaches than snow at this time of year. In addition, Méribel is hosting the junior British Alpine Ski Championships this week, an event which brings hundreds of British families to the resort. Hence the resort is filled with UK-registered cars, the slopes are full of British families and I experience the strange sensation having been magically transported to the Home Counties. ...more
New Gen Freeski Camp Diary Day 4 & 5 : 1st April 20125 days of tricks & tips from New Generation Meribel
by Jack Franks | | published: 1st Apr, 2012Day 4: I am in a state of absolute euphoria. The fourth day at the ski camp has blown the rest of the week clean out of the water. I arrived early, only to find that a certain Prince William and his lovely wife had joined the camp, keen to brush up on their freestyle skills. We took the first run nice and easy but by the second, Wills was following me down the superpipe, pulling switch cork 360s all the way. Kate was a little worried but some gentle persuasion from myself had her nailing backflips by the latter part of the session. Unfortunately she had to leave for a little while and pop down to Mottaret to pick up some new Bonfire salopettes. Her TK Maxx specials were far too tight. ...more
Penguins on the piste : 30th March 2012Val Thorens goes Antarctic
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 30th Mar, 2012I was skiing through Val Thorens yesterday when I saw the surreal sight of a six foot penguin colliding with a snowboarder. It’s not every day that you see a penguin pick itself up and carefully straighten its beak, but that’s the sort of sight we’re seeing more often on the slopes these days. What is it about fancy dress and the British? Perhaps it’s something to do with the arrival of spring. As soon as the sun comes out the French start sunbathing; the Italians turn to thoughts love; and the British feel an urge to dress as giant cuddly toys. No wonder the rest of Europe think we’re a bit odd. ...more
New Gen Freeski Camp Diary Day 1-3 : 29th March 20125 days of tricks & tips from New Generation Meribel
by Jack Franks | | published: 29th Mar, 2012Day 1: Well unfortunately I was struck down by a mystery illness on the first day of the ski school so had to miss a session. Hopefully this wasn’t my body trying to warn me away ! ...more
Les 3 Vallées – fit for royalty : 27th March 2012Prince Edward is in Meribel : are Kate and Wills too?
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 27th Mar, 2012Meribel is agog at the rumour that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are holidaying in the resort. Our resort already enjoys one royal stamp of approval: Prince Edward is Patron of Snowsport GB and supports the British Ski Championships being held in Méribel this week. ...more
Yet more sunshine : 25th March 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 25th Mar, 2012There is no change to report on snow conditions today as the snow showers forecast for Friday night and Saturday never materialised. Instead, the weather has set fair and we are expecting a whole week of mild and sunny weather. This sort of weather is glorious for sunbathing but perhaps not so good for the snowpack. Many of the pistes have already transformed into spring snow and it’s a fair assumption that conditions will become more spring-like as the week continues. ...more
Your chance to be trained up by Freestyle Pros! : 24th March 2012The New Gen Freeski Camp runs from Mon - Fri this week
by Jack Franks | | published: 24th Mar, 2012This week in Meribel there is a unique opportunity for Freestyle skiers of all levels who are keen to improve their skills. New Generation Ski Schools will be holding a ‘FreeSki Camp’ from Monday to Friday. This is a weeklong series of freestyle lessons held by actual pro freeskiers, sponsored by ‘Nordica’. ...more
Hello spring; goodbye Choucas restaurant : 23rd March 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 23rd Mar, 2012Spring has officially started and, as if on command, the weather has turned spring-like. The sun is shining, birds are singing, the temperature reached 18C at 1000m yesterday, and the fresh snow that fell on Monday in the resort is melting fast. The sunnier slopes are inevitably turning back into spring snow. ...more
Black run heaven : 21st March 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 21st Mar, 2012Today’s skiing conditions were described by the director of Méribel’s lift company on the local radio station as “le top du top”. I couldn’t agree more. The slopes have been much improved both by the drop in temperature, which has allowed the snow cannons to run, and the 10-15cm of powder that fell on Monday. We now have a groomed layer of soft snow on top of a hard base which gives us excellent, fast and grippy skiing conditions. Only the lower slopes are a bit slushy at the end of the day. These wonderful conditions may not last for long as sunshine is forecast for the rest of this week and the slopes are likely to return to their previous spring-like conditions. Today was therefore a day to make the most of the excellent snow. ...more
Fresh snow at last : 19th March 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 19th Mar, 2012“Yowza! Where did all this powder come from?” asked the presenter on Radio R’ Méribel this morning. Indeed the weather has changed incredibly fast. Yesterday lunchtime I was sunbathing on my terrace and a couple of hours later snowflakes started falling from the sky. The weather forecast promised snow at the start of this week but we didn’t quite believe them: it had been sunny and spring-like for so long that it was becoming difficult to imagine snow ever falling again. ...more
Spectacular weather : 16th March 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 16th Mar, 2012Brilliant blue sky is what I see every morning when I throw open the curtain. I am reminded of the scene in the film White Mischief where Alice de Janze looks out of her window onto a perfect African dawn and wearily says: “Oh God, not another f****** beautiful day”. The weather here has been so perfect for so long that we’re beginning to pine for some really filthy, wintry weather. Sunshine is gorgeous, but some snow would be heaven too. ...more
Sunshine and the Gebroulaz glacier : 14th March 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 14th Mar, 2012All you need to know about the conditions here can be summed up in one word: sunshine. The sun has blazed every day this week and is forecast to continue shining until next week. Fortunately, a cool north breeze is keeping the snowpack (and skiers) from melting entirely. Snow conditions both on and off-piste are varied, with high and north-facing slopes still offering dry snow and sun-exposed slopes now transformed into spring snow. ...more
A time for picnics, lazy skiing and enjoying the sunshine : 11th March 2012
by Caroline Sayer | | published: 11th Mar, 2012Rejoice! The French half term holiday ends today and we can now get on with the serious business of making the most of wonderful March skiing conditions. Today was what our Courchnet snow reporter refers to as ‘bluebird’ skiing: bright blue skies, strong sunshine, lovely snow and quiet pistes. ...more
