Meribel Snow Report: 24th March 2014

featured in Snow report Author Cara Brown - Ski Racer, Guest Reporter Updated

#Winterisback is the hashtag of the week! There has been another dump of snow across France and in Meribel the snow isn’t due to stop until Thursday but it will be lighter than the weekend's dump.

In the last 24hours 10cm of fresh snow has fallen and we are due another 12cm. There is a lot of humidity in the air so the snow is heavy and has created a base of packed powder. Last week the end of the season wasn’t looking promising as temperatures soared to nearly twenty degrees in Meribel but the recent weather means that even when the sun comes out in the next few days there will still be plenty of snow around. Virtually all the pistes are still open so check out the piste map, find out what you haven’t yet skied, and get up there!

Unfortunately all the snow hasn’t been great for ski racing as all the Ladies French Championship speed races in Meribel were cancelled and 3 days of racing in Villard de Lans were also cancelled. Nevertheless the weather is due to clear up just in time for the British Championships this weekend!
On a sadder note, today Chemmy Alcott, Britain’s number one female alpine skier, announced her retirement. Chemmy is a four time Olympian, has represented team GB at five World Championships and had five top ten results in World Cup. Despite some serious injuries throughout her career, including a double fracture in her leg, Chemmy has never given up and has kept fighting! You can watch a short video that Chemmy made about her skiing career on her website Chemmyalcott.com
Chemmy will be making a final appearance at the British Championships next week so make sure you come along to show your support!
