Here in the Three Valleys we are getting an unexpected dump of snow that is very much reminiscent of last years April showers. We don't quite have the two feet of fresh powder of last year just yet but there is about 3 inches of snow settling on the vehicles up at Meribel 1600 and it doesn't seem to be letting up. Once again the trees are pretty and white and the resorts are aesthetically back to their winter finest. There is an unmistakeable chill in the air and the snow level certainly seems to be dropping. Lets keep our fingers crossed for that foot of fresh powder over night!
Now That Was Big: 18th March 2013

After last week's mini-dump we awoke this morning to a winter wonderland in the 3 Valleys. This morning as I walked to work it resembled a scene from 28 Days Later with barely a soul in sight and very notably no cars on the roads. After a dump of around 20cms overnight, cars struggled to get around and the result was many stranded cars lower down the valley and peaceful roads up top. Then the lifts opened and the crowds emerged goggle clad and ready to take on the powder. It's snowed for most of the day and is not due to abate anytime soon which is great news for powder hunters this week and those visiting next week. The pistes will be well coated again and there'll be fresh tracks to be had for days. It's worth noting though that with the spring temperatures this is prime avalanche territory so if you're heading off piste be safe and make sure your've got the right avalanche safety gear, knowledge and experience.
A Mid March Dump: 14th March 2013

We've had a good dump of snow here in the 3 Vallees - about 10cm in Meribel and Courchevel overnight with 15cm on the mountain and up in Val Thorens. You can still feel the base off piste but the pistes have been nicely topped up. It's currently minus 7 in resort and there is more fresh snow forecast for next week. The wind is blowing the snow around a bit and the visibility is low but when the weather settles and clears we should be in for some great skiing.
Winter Returns : 11th March 2013

After a dry and mild spell, winter has returned to the 3 Valleys. Friday was a dispiriting day as heavy rain fell in Meribel and Courchevel, but fortunately this precipitation fell as snow just above resort level. More snow fell this morning to below the resorts, further freshening the slopes. We’ve been enjoying thoroughly enjoyable conditions on piste with dry and soft snow on the upper runs and a thin layer of soft and slushy snow on a firm base on the lower runs. Off-piste, more snow fell in the Val Thorens valley than in Méribel – around 10-15cm at high altitude - plus there is lovely spring snow developing in low and sunny areas. The forecast is for low temperatures, unsettled weather and a little more snow this week, so conditions should stay good for the foreseeable future.
Groundhog Day: 15th February 2013

Do you remember the film Groundhog Day? The one where Bill Murray wakes each morning to a snowstorm and lives the same day over and over again? Well, it feels a bit like that in Les Trois Vallees. Every morning the alarm goes off, the radio announces another day of snowfall and we go outside and clear the drive yet again. We head out into the clouds and ski on more lovely powder and try to remember what it was like in previous seasons when there were dry weeks, scratchy snow cover or heat waves. We are enjoying possibly the best season ever here in the 3 Valleys and this week has been yet another snowy one. There have been several snowfalls including a mini dump last night. The forecast is for sunshine (at last!) from Saturday onwards, so if you are coming for half term week, conditions should be stunning.
