It's snowing AGAIN! : 31st January 2012

It is snowing, yet again, in the Three Valleys! It started, very gently, at around 8pm last night with those very tiny flakes you get when it's cold. I assume it snowed on and off all night as we had 12cms of fresh snow by dawn, here in Le Praz at 1300 metres.  

The temperature is still cold at -3.6°c mid morning and the snow has been falling steadily. Even the main route up through all of the Courchevel villages is snow covered and the drivers coming downhill are driving very, very slowly and carefully. Chains are required from just above Moutiers and the chain police will be out enforcing this. Look for signs 'Aire de Chainage' which designates small stopping areas to put chains on safely.

The snow ploughs are out in abundance together with the gritting/ salting lorries but only on the main road up the mountain currently. Any of the side roads, like the loop into Courchevel 1550 will remain tricky for a day or so. France Meteo says that this snowfall will continue well into this evening. What an amazing season!

It's snowing in the 3 valleys! : 20th January 2012

It's now snowing properly here in the Three Valleys. Big fluffy flakes have been falling since 11.30 this morning in Courchevel and the forecast from France Meteo is for 'neige forte', or heavy snow, all afternoon, evening and through until tomorrow morning. 

Around 50 cms. of snow seems to be the expectation and after just one hour, Courchevel 1850 had had 7 cms. The roads are already covered in snow and the snow / rain boundary seems to be such that it's snowing everywhere above Moutiers. If this continues as expected then arrivals / departures on Saturday are certainly going to be disrupted. If you're driving into resort tomorrow, make sure you have chains AND that you've practised fitting them.

First Dump Alert of 2012 : 5th January 2012

It's snowing AGAIN in the Three Valleys! 

It started around dawn this morning, adding to the 40 cms. of snowfall that fell on Tues and Weds. We've now had 11hours of solid snowfall all the way down to low levels in the valley below Courchevel. Although it's not possible to get up the top of the mountain, I suspect at least 50cms has fallen if the Jean Blanc piste outside my window is anything to go by.

The roads are all extremely treacherous with 6 inches of hard packed snow on all the roads from St Bon and on up through all the Courchevel villages. It is impossible to get around by car without snow tyres / cahins / 4 wheel drive (or preferably all three!).

Snowfalls are expected to continue all night and into Friday (according to France Météo) with more light snow throughout the weekend. Tuesday onwards should be sunny, then we'll get a chance to enjoy all this white stuff!

Great grand mauvais temps

Yippee! It’s snowing heavily again in the 3 Valleys! The forecast is for “grand mauvais temps” (literally translated: big, bad weather) which is, of course, the sort of weather that we skiers like most.

Proper snow falls once again at 1450m

It's dumping down here in Meribel. Between 2 -3 inches have already fallen this morning and at the moment it is not slowing up.

In Val Thorens and Courchevel the snow is falling too wtih the forecasters predicted about ten centimetres throughout the day, which we have already passed!

There is snow forecast across the Three Vallees all this week with a heavy dump predicted for the end of the week. Keep checking our snow reports for the latest news.

Finally, it snows!

At last! We've had our fingers AND toes crossed all weekend and, finally, we have woken up to snow covered pistes (we suspect it is around 10cm higher up). This morning it is still drizzling in town which means it'll be snowing up top. The weather is even obscuring the webcams, which is always a good sign.

This may not technically constitute a 'dump' as it is only a few centimentres, however, it is the first proper fall of the season and we are all extremely excited (and relieved - some weather bods were predicting no snow until January). The really good news is the forecast for the next 24 - 48 hours is for cooler temperatures and more snow. Time to start dusting down your board/ skis!
