Meribel Apres Ski Report: 18th February 2013

Jack's Not Quite Back

featured in Nightlife reviews Author Jack Franks, Meribel Reporter Updated

I have been in Meribel for 12 days and haven’t been skiing here yet. I think this might be more frustrating than being back in England commuting to London every day.

From where I sit right now I can actually see people coming off of the slopes, covered in snow, loving life.

To cut a long story short, I arrived here to a job. I worked for nine days without being given a day off, a ski pass, or moving into my accommodation and then decided that perhaps I had taken the wrong job and left.

So I am now homeless and unemployed. Not even a ski bum... just a bum.

As you can probably imagine there hasn’t been a great deal of après for me to report on, hence my temporary silence.
Over the past week the après schedule has been incredible in Meribel with MC Akil of Jurassic 5 taking to the mic in Dick’s Tea Bar, Blind Date at The Den which I have heard was as cringingly hilarious as ever and Daisy and Tom’s open mic night at Scotts and plenty of Valentine’s Day themed fun.

The two man chair lift coming out of La Tania even hosted an ingenious speed dating day on their chairs on Valentines Day last Thursday.

So my mission for this week is to find myself a home and a job – but also to go and enjoy some après and other events and activities around resort and report back to you.

I did manage to get to one live music event in resort this week. On Tuesday night I had the pleasure of seeing La Tania favourites, Les Trois Tetes, play live in The Den. I had never seen them before but band member, Adam Wilkens, is part of one of my favourite musical groups in the Alps, The Rambling Roots. Les Trois Tetes are an energetic, female fronted three piece. They play a mixture of pop and rock covers and classic dance tunes. They did not disappoint and although The Den was fairly quiet, they had everyone up on their feet dancing and the place was jumping.

There are plenty of great events coming up in resort. Most notable is the return of the Ski World Cup which is back in Meribel for the first time in over a decade - check out Caroline's guide to the event. The event kicks off on Saturday with the site opening to the public before first lifts. The first downhill race takes place at 10.30 and an opening party will be starting at 2pm with DJs and a disco.

Keep a look out for several World Cup related events taking place around resort and for any more information, head to the Office du Tourisme, next to Le Pub.
