What we say
Open for lunch and dinner it is situated just across the main road from the Troika beginner’s piste in the centre of the resort. Access can be gained via a public lift next to the Montana Hotel which takes you down to the ski bus stop immediately opposite.
A little history behind the name:
The Taiga or Boreal forest exists as a nearly continuous belt of coniferous trees across North America and Eurasia. Overlying formerly glaciated areas and areas of patchy permafrost on both continents, the forest is mosaic of successional and sub-climatic plant communities sensitive to varying environmental conditions. Taiga is the Russian name for this forest which covers so much of that country. However, the term is used in North America as well.
Proud to be a Ski Resort situated in a beautiful forest owners Tim and Debbie Wall have kept the name of the original restaurant but added their touches of both traditional and modern Savoyarde cuisine with an extended mezzanine floor and new decor. The atmosphere created by the décor and layout of the restaurant establishes a relaxing and inviting setting.
To start with I had the Salade Taiga (15.5€)- 2 scallops, 2 fillets of lemon sole, 2 pieces of toast with smoked salmon, a king prawn and a mountain of salad later I was feeling very satisfied and quite full!! This made for a large starter or could quite easily suffice for a sumptuous lunch. The 2nd starter of Fois Gras with onion compote served with a glass of sweet Montbazillac wine (18€) was a good portion of a rich and silky smooth fois gras complemented very well by the onion compote. It was served with plenty of hot toast.
For main course my partner chose the Fillet of Venison in a red fruit sauce(20€). This dish was a real triumph. The venison was cooked to perfection and the delicious rich meat was set off perfectly by the strong sauce. The accompaniments of gratin dauphinois (the classic French potato dish in a cream sauce) and tomato farci rounded off a delightful dish.
My Rack of Lamb with Rosemary and Gratin Dauphinois (21€) was equally good. The dish looked fantastic when it arrived and tasted better. The rosemary and red wine gravy set off a perfectly cooked lamb.
Desserts consisted of A warm Tarte aux Pommes with Vanilla Ice cream flamed with Calvados9.5€ and Crème Brulee a l’Orange(7€). The excellent tarte aux pommes was served in style with the flaming apple brandy being poured over the dessert at the table. Meanwhile the homemade crème brulee with orange zest was delicious variety on the French classic.
The wine list boasts a great selection of French, Italian and new World wines. We chose an organic Bordeaux red from the Chateau Peybonhamnie (27€). This was a light bodied wine but full of taste and complemented our dinner well. Other French wines on offer were from all the main regions including Bourgogne, the Loire and the local Savoie labels. If you fancy spoiling yourself then take your pick of the Prestige wines!
La Taiga serves a variety of good value menus including a 36€ three course dinner, an 18€ Skiers lunch menu and a daily plat du jour for 12€.
On Monday and Tuesday each week why not venture onto the leather sofas next to the Scandinavian poele fire in the bar and enjoy either a sushi night or champagne and oysters - (alternate weeks). Watch out for the excellent live music acts as well!
