Skiing Off Piste in Meribel To Be Avoided After Such Heavy Snow Fall

Avalanche Risks Remain HIGH across the Alps

Further to weather warnings issued last week, heavy snow fall and a consistently high avalanche risk, the authorities are strongly advising that people should not to ski, snowboard or undertake any off piste activities at the moment.

Several avalanches have been triggered in the last few days, in a number of resorts, predominantly triggered by groups of people venturing off piste, and in some cases very close to the sides of the pistes.

The prefecture of the region is asking that people respect taped-off areas in the ski areas - if they're closed they're closed for a reason - your safety!

" As reported yesterday, the avalanche risk (including natural slides and those set off accidentally) is high and remains high today, 1st Feb. We strongly advise against any off piste activity due to large quantities of mobile snow. There is a high risk of an avalanche being triggered by a single skier or a snowshoer, even close to the pistes.

On Saturday (30th) 4 skiers, luckily uninjured, were carried by avalanches that they set off themselves. One of them happened just a few metres from the piste and was 100m in length. Once again, the under layer is bad and the layers of new snow will be reinforce themselves over the next hours. Be responsible and stay on the piste."

The avalanche risk is expected to remain high this week, so the advice is to stay on piste unless you are with a guide, or have the skills, experience and equipment to deal with conditions like these.
