Mountain Passes Open

Mountain cols now open to road cyclists and day trippers

Road bikers take note as mountain passes are opening up throughout the Alps.

The Alpine roads management have announced a number of new openings of high altitude mountain passes, adding to the large number of cols already open to circulation. The Mont-Cenis and the Croix-de-Fer were amongst the first to open, however a few of the more popular routes are still closed, including the Cormet de Roseland, Petit-Saint-Bernard and the Glandon.
The Col d'Iseran is normally last on the list to open due to the extreme amounts of snow to clear - check out the video of last years' clearance for an idea of what is involved.

For those aspiring to conquer the cols you can check out this website for a full list of the mountain passes in the Alps and their current status. Also worth checking out is the One Day One Col events across the Alps, where a mountain pass is closed to motor traffic to allow road bikers to enjoy the climb and scenery in peace.
